Snowbound

As you've probably heard by now, the government is shutdown again today, this time due to snow!

We got about 2 inches of the fluffy white stuff here. According to the news, I think some had it much worse than us, which I just can't imagine. I worked up the courage to go take this photo of a local landmark. I believe this old barn is what's left of a dairy farm from long ago.

When we get snow here in Northern Virginia, it makes me laugh to see how the folks here react to it since they really aren't used to dealing with snow. But, it's normal to react to what you're used to and we just don't get much snow here...although there have been exceptions.

When it snows, it also makes me recall the days when we lived in North Dakota. You had to be strong to endure winters in the northern tundra. It wasn't uncommon for us to get 2 to 3 feet of snow at a time. I remember having snow piled up in our front yard higher than the roof line of the house, and our 4 year old daughter climbing to the top of it. I remember kids going outside for recess as long as the temperature wasn't below zero. I remember wind chill temperatures of -100 degrees (that wasn't a typo, I really mean negative 100). I remember frequently getting up early, shoveling 2 feet of snow out of the driveway, and then going to work.

I really don't remember staying home because everything was shut down due to snow...it happened on a couple of rare occasions but not very often. I want to thank Mother Nature for a much needed day off and I hope life, as we know it, returns to normal tomorrow.
